Choose Custom with Studio McGee Window Treatments

Studio McGee is synonymous with effortless, approachable luxury and has been ever since launching in 2014 and gaining a devoted following with their Netflix show, Dream Home Makeover. Shea McGee’s latest venture brings her signature style into custom window treatments with a debut collection for The Shade Store. Designed by Shea herself, these fabrics feature a calming palette with rich texture that invite you to curate your own personal haven with Studio McGee window treatments.

Introducing the Studio McGee Collection

Subtle patterns and relaxing hues are the defining features of the Studio McGee collection. Inspired by Shea’s favorite influences, including classic Americana and the beauty of nature, the collection is versatile and timeless—but still manages to feel fresh. The warm, neutral color palette is punctuated with patterns and textures that lend each design a sense of depth. “I love that when you step back, a lot of these materials have a neutral effect, but when you get close, you see all the beautiful, luxe details,” says Shea.

Hear from Shea herself about her collection and see Studio McGee window treatments brought to life in her very own home.

Why Choose Custom & Tips for Getting Started

Shea relies on custom window treatments, not only for her design projects, but also for the window treatments in her own home. “For me, it’s about the transformative power of layering luxury and personality, allowing the window to become a room’s defining feature. That’s why I always use custom window treatments in all my projects,” says Shea.

Benefits of Custom Window Treatments

Custom window treatments also offer benefits over their premade counterparts that elevate not only the look of your space, but its functionality too. Some benefits of custom window treatments according to Shea include:

  • Feeling confident in your project thanks to your ability to be in control of every detail.
  • Enjoying complete flexibility to get the right look and functionality for every space in your home.
  • Adding value to your home with tailored, high-quality window treatments that elevate your home.

Tips from Shea for Your Custom Project

Pictured: Tulip Roman Shade with privacy lining, Studio McGee Wildvine in Flax, design by Studio McGee, photography by Lucy Call

To ensure your custom window treatment project is a success, take this advice that Shea uses herself:

  • Start with functionality: Do you need a blackout effect, insulation, ease of control or another function? These factors help narrow down the type of Studio McGee window treatments that will best suit your space.
  • Get the measurements right: Ill-fitting window treatments can throw off the whole look and feel of a room. For a polished, curated look, your window treatments should perfectly fit within the window frame for an inside-mount application. Or, for outside mount, they should extend beyond the frame to visually heighten your space.
  • Choose materials that complement your room’s mood: The fabric color and pattern you choose won’t just affect the aesthetic of the space, but the feel of it too. Make sure to choose the right fabrics—like soft, natural cotton or linen for relaxation, or a pattern for more dramatic spaces—for an intentional design.
  • Think of window treatments as an essential part of your room’s design: The textures and tones window treatments bring to your space affect the overall design, so approach your window treatments as a foundational layer, rather than a finishing touch. The result will be a more balanced, elevated and complete aesthetic.

A Relaxing Hangout

Living rooms are for spending time with your loved ones in a relaxing space, and custom window treatments can help you achieve the right look with the right privacy and light control. In her bright, welcoming living room, Shea chose drapes made of her Stonewash fabric in White, which is a warm ivory color with a subtle shimmer. She says about Stonewash, “I had my heart set on creating a beautiful stone wash European Linen and after many iterations, we created the most beautiful drapery fabric.” The effect is a soft, elegant look and that invites touch. With privacy lining on the drapes, Shea is able to soften light in the room for a warm glow while enjoying peace of mind.

Other design elements in the room, such as the modern stools and classically shaped couch feature her signature style: “As a designer, I’m known for mixing old and new together in one space, and my living room really embodies that signature aesthetic.”

A Calming Sanctuary

Your bedroom should be a relaxing haven where you can wind down from your busy day. For Shea, creating a sanctuary was essential. “When designing our bedroom, I really wanted it to be a calming retreat from all the busyness that happens in our daily lives. This is our Gypsum Stripe fabric. I’m so excited about it that I decided to layer both the drape and the Roman Shade in the same fabric—and then of course did a blackout lining because that is the key to a relaxing retreat.”

Studio McGee window treatments made of Gypsum Stripe in Canvas deliver warm, neutral color that’s full of texture. The sandy colored drapes invite touch with their rich texture while softening the look of the space. The Flat Roman Shades balance the softness of the drapes with their clean, simple lines while adding architectural structure to the room’s design. Plus, the blackout lining creates a tranquil room darkening effect ideal for sleep.

Simple, Chic & Functional

While a mudroom may not be the first room that comes to mind for custom Studio McGee window treatments, creating a cohesive design through your entire home means no room goes untouched. Especially for a mudroom with wide windows, window treatments can give you privacy when you need it, as well as adding a curated aesthetic. To contrast the dark cabinets, Shea chose her Ticking Stripe fabric in Dune, a warm, off-white color with subtle stripes, for Flat Roman Shades. The shades offer clean, crisp lines for a modern look that mirrors the lines of the cabinetry and wall paneling. Plus, with motorized control, Shea can easily control their height with just the press of a button—which is ideal for tall windows behind a counter.

A Contemplative Mood

Drapery in Field Plaid in Canyon and Roman Shades in Textured Multiweave in Almond add depth to a dark office

While most of Shea’s home is light and bright, her husband, Syd’s, office offers contrast with its dark walls that create a contemplative atmosphere. To balance the deep color of the walls while still maintaining a sense of dimension in the design, Shea chose to layer two highly textured fabrics: “I did a mix and match effect with the Roman Shade and the Drapes. I love plaid because if feels really classic, [and] it’s a great way to incorporate pattern into your space in a subtle way.”

Field Plaid in Canyon is a warm, medium-beige shade that gently lightens the space without creating too dramatic of a contrast with the rich-toned walls. Layering Textured Multiweave in Almond for the Roman Shades with privacy lining brightens the space even more with a lighter shade illuminated further with natural light filtering through. The layered Studio McGee window treatments create a dynamic design that’s also practical, so Syd can achieve the right level of light control and privacy any time of the day.

Casual Elegance

Relaxed Roman Shades made of Galley Gingham in Willow add a charming touch to windows behind a kitchen sink

Even custom Studio McGee window treatments on small windows can make a big impact on your room’s overall design. For her kitchen window behind the sink, Shea chose her Galley Gingham fabric in Willow, a soft, sage green color, for Relaxed Roman Shades. The subtle pattern adds just a touch of color to the charming, gently swooped shades, for an intentional, refined effect. Shea says of the pattern, “I love gingham…I wanted to create an effect that allowed [the pattern] to be a soft color in the room but not overpower a design; just complement it.”

10 Living Room Curtain Ideas to Transform Your Room

Curtains play an impactful role in your living room design by influencing the aesthetic, atmosphere, and feel of the space. Drapes, with their long, elegant panels of fabric, make a dramatic statement to your interior design while also often providing needed privacy and light control. Explore just how transformative drapery can be with living room curtain ideas that showcase different aesthetics, pleat styles, fabrics, and more.

Tips for Choosing the Right Living Room Drapes

As you review living room curtain ideas, keep these three tips in mind to help choose the right drapery for your space.

Match Your Room’s Style
Choose living room curtains that complement your existing décor, color palette, patterns, and textures, unless you plan to redesign the space.

Consider Function & Style
Think about how often you will open and close your drapes. Functional styles should be easy to use, while decorative styles can focus more on the look.

Plan for Privacy & Light
Consider how much privacy and light control you want. The right fabric and style can soften light, improve privacy, and help insulate the room.

Curtain Ideas to Inspire Your Living Space

Get inspired by these curated living room curtain design ideas. Explore beautiful living rooms featuring a variety of drapery aesthetics, pleat styles, fabrics, functionality and more to find the perfect combination for your space.

1. Blur Transitions with Sheers In an Open-Air Living Room

Transitional spaces are those that seamlessly blur the lines between the indoors and the outdoors. In a living room that opens to a patio or backyard, living room curtain ideas need to include not only aesthetics to soften the transition, but also functionality for easy movement in and out of doors.

For a seamless transition, light-filtering sheer curtains bring an airy feel that helps bridge two spaces while allowing plenty of natural light into your home. Choose a color that’s complementary to your living room color scheme without contrasting with any colors in your outdoor living space. Neutral curtains like beige or grey are ideal, and you can enliven the look by choosing a subtle pattern or texture, like Andreas in Parchment. When considering your pleat style and hardware, opt for an easy-to-use combination like Ripple Fold Drapery on a track system so you can open and close your drapes effortlessly.

2. Add Height & Drama with Floor-to-Ceiling Curtains in the Living Room

For tall, wide living room windows, drapery should emphasize the dramatic height of your windows while also being efficient in terms of functionality. Window curtain design ideas like these often highlight the wide panels of fabric that easily stretch from wall to wall and up to your ceiling, creating a spacious look and feel.

To keep your room from feeling too open, living room window curtain ideas should feature a pleat style with more visual weight to it, like Pinch Pleat Drapery. A pinch pleat has three-finger pleats pinched four inches from the top of the panel which create a visual break right at your ceiling to stop the eye and ground the design. You can add additional depth and dimension to your design when you choose a fabric with a subtle pattern and texture like Surrey Stripe. The vertical pinstripe-inspired lines complement the verticality of your wall and windows while adding visual texture that further grounds the design.

3. Introduce Soft Color & Texture To Warm Up Your Space

Curtains for living room spaces in soft sky blue add color and texture to a bright room with tall glass windows and doors.

Spaces with tall glass windows and doors are another kind of transitional space. When looking for living room curtain ideas, consider drapes that soften the room as much as they function within it. The right drapery can help balance hard architectural surfaces by adding warmth, movement, and visual texture, while also giving you the privacy and light control you need.

Tailored Pleat Drapery is a strong choice because its soft fabric panels help make glass-and-metal spaces feel more inviting, while its structured three-finger pleats keep the look polished and refined. It’s also one of the most functional pleat styles available, compatible with traditional rod and rings hardware, as pictured, as well as track system hardware for even easier use. Adding privacy or blackout lining can further soften the brightness of the space by blocking some or most of the light streaming in.

In a living room with primarily dark or neutral tones, use your drapery to add a touch of color and visual texture to your design. A sky-blue fabric with a subtle pattern brings a cheerful, airy tone to your living room while adding visual depth and dimension with its linear pattern.

4. Go Luxe with Natural Fabric & Decorative Trim

Have a luxurious living room with arched windows and beautiful crown molding? Living room curtain ideas for your formal space should focus on high-end natural materials and elegant details to match the opulence of the space. Linen, silk or wool fabrics all deliver character-rich beauty thanks to their unique natural qualities like linen’s laissez-faire look with soft wrinkles, silk’s subtle sheen and wool’s heathered texture.

Delicate trim on your drapes creates a highly curated look by adding a subtle, yet luxurious, detail to the design. Plus, for any space with arched windows, you’ll see curtain ideas for living room designs as an optimal choice. The drapes allow you to fully enjoy the architectural beauty of the arches—thanks to their ability to be fully pulled off the windows—while still giving you the light and privacy control you need.

5. Create a Rich, Earthy Look with Dark Olive-Grey Drapery

Ripple Fold Drapery in Lisbon Woven Agave brings an earthy, grounded look to a warm neutral guest bedroom.

For a calming, nature-inspired aesthetic, consider living room curtain ideas that feature organic tones and natural materials. Earthy hues like warm olive-grey create a grounded, tranquil vibe—perfect for spaces that include wood furniture, woven decor, and indoor greenery. Lisbon Woven in Agave is an ideal fabric choice for your drapery, thanks to its rich, stone-like tone and subtle hand-woven texture. This linen-blend fabric adds depth and visual warmth, making it ideal for creating a cozy, layered look.

For pleat style, consider Ripple Fold Drapery, with soft, wave-like folds that mimic the gentle shadows of afternoon light and bring a flowing, relaxed feel to the room—ideal for casual, earthy spaces that prioritize comfort and elegance.

6. Embrace the Minimalism of Monochrome

Modern living room curtain concept in a soft monochrome design pairs Ripple Fold Drapery with woven shades for layered texture.
Pictured: Outer Layer: Ripple Fold Drapery, Heathered Linen in Ivory and Inner Layer: Waterfall Woven Wood Shades, Grassweave in Snow, design by Bronwyn Ford and Pursley Dixon for the 2023 Kips Bay Dallas Showhouse

Monochromatic designs may feel like a dull option when considering living room curtain ideas. However, with the right layers and textures, these designs create an inviting, versatile space. Especially for wall-to-wall drapery in a room with a lower ceiling, choosing a monochrome color scheme can help the space feel taller and more expansive by blurring visual boundaries between the wall, ceiling and window treatments.

Modern drapery with a sleek silhouette, like Ripple Fold Drapery creates crisp vertical lines that help to add height to your room. Plus, being compatible with a track system ensures easy control of your wall-to-wall drapes—especially if you opt for a motorized track system.

7. Create Subtle Dimension with Textured Layers

Curtains for living room ideas with layered drapery, Roman shades, and solar shades in a warm wood-toned setting.
Pictured: Outer Layer: Ripple Fold Drapery, Linen in Natural and Inner Layers: Flat Roman Shade, Sahara Stripe in Desert and Solar Shades, 3% Thermo in Cloud, design by Everick Brown

When considering living room curtain ideas, don’t ignore other window treatment options. Layering curtains with shades or blinds adds both functionality and depth, allowing you to adjust light and privacy levels while enhancing visual interest.

Start with a base when layering: Do you want the drapery or the shade to be the design focal point? Once that’s decided, build around it with complementary colors, patterns, and textures.

For a living room with lots of wood tones, Ripple Fold Drapery made of Linen in Natural offers a soft warm beige color that complements the wood. Layer in Roman Shades, with fabric of the same color temperature (warm, in this case), like Sahara Stripe in Desert, which has sandy stripes on an off-white background for subtle visual interest. For an optional third layer, choose Solar Shades in a similar warm tone, just a shade lighter or darker.

8. Add a Grounding Linear Design to a Breezy Coastal Room

An example of living room curtain ideas in a bright coastal-inspired space with striped drapes
Pictured: Tailored Pleat Drapery, Victoria Hagan, Harbor Stripe in Sand, design by Victoria Hagan

For a bright, breezy living room with coastal charm, consider living room curtain ideas that balance the lightness of the space without weighing it down. Light blues, soft greys, and whites can be complemented with just a touch of warmth and grounding color. Tailored pleat drapery made of Harbor Stripe in Sand can do just that. Its shadow stripes add subtle depth without overpowering the room, while the sandy tone ties together beachy neutrals.

To create contrast and enhance definition, choose Wrought Iron Hardware in Black. The dark hardware pops against white walls and brings in a modern, high-contrast element to ground the airy color scheme.

9. Pair Soft Neutral Drapes with Patterned Shades

Soft neutral drapes and striped Roman Shades create a layered living room curtain design around a large window and lounge chair
Pictured: Outer Layer: Ripple Fold Drapery, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Mirador in Ivory, Inner Layer: Cascade Roman Shades, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Nomad Stripe in Sand, design by Martyn Lawrence Bullard

While drapes are the spotlight of many living room curtain ideas, that doesn’t always need to be the case, especially when layering window treatments. In fact, curtains for the living room can play a supporting role, acting as a soft, neutral backdrop that lets another window treatment—like Roman Shades—be the design focal point.

For wide windows or sliding glass doors, drapery is often chosen first for its ability to frame large spaces and provide full coverage. However, modern solutions like Cascade Roman Shades with motorized control deliver comparable functionality while offering a sleek, minimalist profile.

When combining these two treatments, focus on color harmony and texture contrast to achieve a cohesive and intentional look. A linear print like Nomad Stripe in Sand enhances the structured feel of Cascade Roman Shades, reinforcing a crisp, modern aesthetic. Select complementary drapery in a soft, solid tone—think warm beiges or creamy off-whites. Choosing a luxurious fabric with visual and tactile appeal like Mirador in Ivory offers an understated color and rich texture, elevating your look while keeping the shades as the focal point.

10. Combine Style & Function with Privacy-Lined Drapes

Best curtains for living room comfort feature Tailored Pleat Drapery made of Lowell Tweed in Oak in a cozy seating area
Pictured: Tailored Pleat Drapery, Nate Berkus, Lowell Tweed in Oak, design by Nate Berkus

When designing a small or intimate space, the best living room curtain ideas focus on creating visual warmth and subtle sophistication—without overwhelming the room. The key is to choose drapes that make a refined statement through texture, pleat style, and tone, all while supporting the room’s scale.

Tailored Pleat Drapery is a great choice, thanks to its structured look and the three-finger pleat that adds just the right amount of detail. Whether on a track system or rod-and-rings hardware (pictured), this style offers smooth functionality and easy light control from morning to night—ideal for cozy spaces that need flexible ambiance.

To enhance the room’s cozy feel, select a warm neutral tone for your fabric that’s just a few shades darker than your walls. This creates a soft, tonal contrast that adds depth without shrinking the space. For example, if your walls are a warm light beige, a drapery fabric like Lowell Tweed in Oak—a slightly deeper beige or light brown—provides a harmonious look. Plus, the textured weave of Lowell Tweed brings a tactile, touchable quality to the room, reinforcing a sense of comfort and intimacy.

Best Shades for Sliding Glass Doors

Sliding glass doors are highly desirable for many homes. From kitchens to bedrooms, they offer lots of natural light and an unhindered view of your home’s surroundings. Yet sometimes all the light and unobstructed views can be too much, affecting your privacy — and in the case of bedrooms, a good night’s sleep. That’s why window shades for sliding glass doors are a common solution. With the right window treatments, you can easily control your light and privacy while still maintaining easy use of your doors on a daily basis.

Shades 101: An Overview

Learn what Shades are and discover your product options, including styles, materials, control types and more for a broad understanding of all your options. READ THE GUIDE

What Type of Shades are Best for Sliding Glass Doors?

Solar shades for sliding glass doors allow sunlight to fill a southwest-inspired living room
Pictured: Solar Shades, 3% Thermo in Cloud

The best type of shades for sliding glass doors will ultimately depend on your particular use-case and aesthetic preferences. And some shades are naturally better for sliding glass doors than others. For instance, since you’ll likely use your doors frequently, you need shades that you can easily adjust to access your doors. You’ll also want to think about your light and privacy control needs, as well as an aesthetic you love. And if window shades for sliding doors aren’t quite the right match for you, you also have several blinds and drapery options to choose from.

To find the best window shades for sliding glass doors, or to help you decide on another window treatment option, there are several considerations to think through.

Prioritize Ease of Use

Your sliding doors are likely in a high-traffic area, so being able to use them is a key feature for any window shades for sliding glass doors or other type of treatment like drapery or blinds. Most window treatments come with a continuous loop control, cordless control or motorization. However, cordless control for blinds and shades doesn’t work well if you can’t reach the top of your sliding glass doors, so a cord loop system or motorization is your best bet. Additionally, if your sliding doors are very wide and tall, raising and lowering blinds and shades manually can be difficult, so opt for motorization or choose Vertical Blinds or Drapery that you can easily slide along a track system.

A close up image of shades for sliding glass doors shows layered solar shades under woven wood shades

Achieve the Right Light & Privacy Control

Different types of window shades for sliding glass doors, as well as other window treatments like blinds and drapery come with different levels of light filtration and privacy. Depending on your preferences and needs, you may opt for a light-filtering window treatment that softens light and reduces glare, or a blackout option that blocks up to 99% of light for a tranquil room darkening effect.

Capture a Look You Love

Different window shades for sliding glass doors offer a variety of aesthetic styles for instance, Vertical Blinds are typically modern and minimalist, while Drapery offers a more elegant, luxe look. For more depth and dimension, try layering window treatments, such as Drapery over a set of Roller Shades. You can also customize the look of each window treatment with your chosen material.

Think About Stack for Shades

The stack refers to the size of the shade when it is retracted. A larger stack may hang over the door slightly, even when completely retracted. While this shouldn’t affect the functionality of your sliding glass doors, if you’re at all concerned, it’s best to choose shades with a minimal stack, like Roller or Solar Shades. Or you can mount your chosen shades high enough that they clear the doors even when stacked.

Venetian Roller Shades

With two layers of sheer material with tiltable S-shaped vanes between them, the Venetian style combines the functionality of both blinds and shades.

Each type of Roller Shade comes in either light filtering or blackout material so you can get the right amount of privacy and light control for your space:

  • Light-filtering shades are great for rooms like living rooms and dining rooms where you want glare reduction and privacy while still allowing some natural light in.
  • Blackout Roller Shades for sliding glass doors are ideal for bedrooms where a darkened room is essential for sleep.

Functionality for all Roller Shade types is very simple with either continuous loop control or motorization for a truly effortless experience. While Roller Shades are available with cordless control, if you can’t easily reach the top of your window, it’s best to go with either the corded loop or motorized option.

Key Benefits of Roller Shades for Sliding Glass Doors

  • Sleek, modern design
  • Minimal stack to easily clear the top of your door
  • Light-filtering and blackout material options
  • Easy functionality, including motorization

2. Solar Shades for Sliding Glass Doors

Solar Shades offer the same modern look, minimal stack and easy functionality as Roller Shades but with a few different benefits. Solar Shades are made from material with unique characteristics that help block UV rays and reduce glare, while still letting natural light in and allowing you a view of the outdoors.

When shopping for Solar Shades for sliding glass doors, it’s important to understand the different transparency levels:

A building is seen through solar shades for sliding glass doors showing ten percent transparency

10% Transparency

The shade blocks 90% of UV rays and is the most transparent.

A building is seen through solar shades for sliding glass doors showing five percent transparency

5% Transparency

The shade blocks 95% of UV rays and is semi-transparent.

A building is somewhat seen through solar shades for sliding glass doors showing three percent transparency

3% Transparency

The shade blocks 97% of UV rays and is less semi-transparent.

A building is subtly seen through solar shades for sliding glass doors showing one percent transparency

1% Transparency

The shade blocks 99% of UV rays and is the least transparent.

Solar Shades for sliding glass doors are a great choice for rooms where natural light is welcome and privacy isn’t a big concern. Plus, because Solar Shades block UV rays, they also help to prevent fading of your floors, furniture and décor.

Key Benefits of SOLAR Shades for Sliding Glass Doors

  • Sleek, modern design
  • Minimal stack to easily clear the top of your door
  • UV-blocking material that lets light in while preventing fading or glare
  • Easy functionality, including motorization

Roman Shades Not Suited for Sliding Doors

Tulip and Relaxed Roman Shades are more decorative in style. They feature swooping folds of fabric that will need to be dressed (adjusted) to look their best each time they are raised and lowered.

Plus, the gentle curve of fabric gives these shades larger stacks which means it would have to be installed quite high above your doors to keep the fabric from getting caught in the doors, which may not look ideal.

Additionally, when considering Roman Shades for sliding glass doors, be mindful of the stack. The amount of fabric used and the way Roman Shades fold in on themselves when raised and lowered means they tend to have a larger stack, so may need to be mounted higher if you want them to clear the door.

Key Benefits of ROMAN Shades for Sliding Glass Doors

  • Soft, luxe look
  • Multiple style options from traditional to modern
  • Easy functionality, including motorization, when choosing Flat, Cascade, Aventura or Pleated styles

4. Woven Wood Shades for Sliding Glass Doors

Woven Wood Shades are made with natural fibers like grasses, reeds, and bamboo, and deliver an inviting boho look to your space. All four styles of Woven Wood Shades offer excellent functionality and are easy to raise and lower, whether using a continuous loop control system or motorization.

Of the four styles, three are similar to Roman Shades and the fourth is just like a Roller Shade.

Woven Roman-Style Shades

Just like Roman Shades, these Woven Wood Shades feature material that folds into itself when raised and unfolds in a cascading motion when lowered. These styles may also have a larger stack, so be mindful when choosing these shades for sliding doors.

Woven Roller-Style Shades

Just like a Roller Shade, this style features a single panel of material that rolls around a tube at the top of your window. Only certain, sturdier woven materials, like those from the Natural Collection are compatible with Woven Roller Shades.

Key Benefits of Woven Wood Shades for Sliding Glass Doors

  • Textured, natural look
  • Multiple style options to get the right look
  • Minimal stack when choosing Woven Roller Shades to easily clear the top of your door
  • Easy functionality, including motorization

5. Cellular Shades for Sliding Glass Doors

Cellular Shades offer excellent functionality in multiple ways, from being easy to adjust and offering a minimal stack, to helping with insulation. These shades feature a unique honeycomb design that traps hot and cold air, which in turn helps to regulate the temperature in your home.

You can choose from three main types of Cellular Shades: Light-filtering, blackout and day/night cellular shades:

A bathroom window feature a Cellular Shade made of 3-4 Caluna Light Filtering material in White for privacy
Pictured: Cellular Shades, ¾” Caluna Light Filtering in White

Light Filtering

Made with semi-transparent to sheer fabric, in either a single- or double-cell design, Light-Filtering Cellular Shades soften natural light in your room for a soft, inviting glow, while still providing good privacy.

A bedroom window features a Cellular Shade made of 3-4 Caluna Blackout material in Ash for a room darkening effect
Pictured: Cellular Shades, ¾” Caluna Blackout in Ash

Blackout

Made of opaque material, in either a single- or double-cell design, Blackout Cellular Shades block up to 99% of the light for a tranquil room darkening effect and excellent privacy that’s ideal for bedrooms.

A bathroom window features a Day/Night Cellular Shade with 3-4 Caluna Blackout in White and sheer Frost materials
Pictured: Day/Night Cellular Shade, ¾” Caluna Blackout in White and ¾” Sheer in Frost

Day/Night

With blackout material on the bottom and light-filtering on the top, Day/Night Cellular Shades offer the best of both worlds. However, they only come with cordless control making them less ideal for doors.

Cellular Shades for sliding glass doors are a great choice, especially if your doors let it heat from the sun or are a bit on the drafty side. Plus, with their versatile, minimalist aesthetic, Cellular Shades suit nearly any home interior.

Key Benefits of Cellular Shades for Sliding Glass Doors

  • Simple, highly versatile design
  • Light filtering, blackout and Day/Night options
  • Minimal stack when choosing Woven Roller Shades to easily clear the top of your door

Motorization offers effortless control of your sliding door window treatments by allowing you to adjust them with a remote, an app on your smartphone or even the sound of your voice when paired with a smart home automation system.

When it comes to window shades for sliding glass doors, motorization is the best control option to choose for ease of use. You can even automate your shades to lift and lower over your doors at specific times of day, like sunrise and sunset.

Key Benefits of Motorized Shades for Sliding Glass Doors

  • Available with most styles of shades
  • Can be used with light-filtering or blackout material
  • Easiest option for functionality

7. Vertical Blinds for Sliding Glass Doors

Vertical Blinds, sometimes called Panel Track Blinds, are an ideal choice for sliding glass doors, as they are highly functional and feature a versatile look to suit any style. These blinds feature tall panels that run along a track system, making them easy to slide right or left. Thanks to several panels being on one track system, it’s easy to position them exactly where you need them, whether you leave your entire door exposed, enclosed, or wish to cover just a section of your doors.

Vertical Blinds are only available with light-filtering materials, with varying degrees of opacity for more or less light and privacy control. Since all materials are light filtering, they may not be the best option for bedrooms or media rooms that demand a room darkening effect.

Key Benefits of Vertical blinds for Sliding Glass Doors

  • Modern, versatile design
  • Light-filtering materials beautiful soften light
  • Minimal stack to the sides of your sliding doors
  • Easy functionality

8. Motorized & Track System Drapery for Sliding Glass Doors

Curtains and drapery for sliding glass doors deliver a soft, luxurious look and feel to your space. Options for drapery are varied, but it’s important to note that some types are more functional and better suited to sliding glass doors than others.

This is due to a couple of reasons:

  • First, certain styles of drapery are more decorative and won’t look as aesthetically pleasing when scrunched up at the sides of your doors. Plus, with some styles using more fabric than others, the stack, or amount of space your drapes take up when fully retracted, can be substantial. For example, Inverted Pleat and Goblet Drapery look best when drawn to their full length and can be less attractive with a large stack when retracted. Plus, these styles have a thick stack, so it’s likely the material will overhang your sliding door.
  • Second, some styles of drapery, as well as certain drapery hardware options, are harder to control than others. For instance, Grommet style drapery and any curtains with rod and rings are sometimes more difficult to draw open and closed than a manual or motorized track system.

For the most functional — and highly attractive — drapery options, choose from one of these pleat styles:

Key Benefits of Motorized or Track System Drapery for Sliding Glass Doors

  • Luxurious, elegant aesthetic
  • Multiple pleat styles from traditional to modern
  • Minimal stack to the sides of your sliding doors
  • Easy functionality with motorization or track system

The right drapery or curtains can transform your dining room, giving it the final touch to bring all the elements of your design together. Whether your dining room is opulent and formal or simple and casual, there are dining room curtain styles to suit your aesthetic — while also helping to control your light and privacy. Benefits of Drapery for Your Dining Room

Drapery in dining rooms is a popular choice, for good reason. Drapery offers several benefits, including:

  • Enhanced privacy – Drapery panels increase the privacy in your dining room by blocking the view from the outside. The level of privacy varies depending on the fabric and lining you choose for your drapes, but all functional drapes, even sheers, offer some privacy.
  • Improved light control – Whether you choose curtain sheers that beautifully filter and soften light, or thick fabric with blackout lining to block the light, dining room curtain styles give you improved light control.
  • Elevated aesthetics – Drapery will add design dimension to your dining room window, giving your whole space a polished, finished look.

How to Choose Dining Room Curtains

Before diving into dining room curtain ideas, it’s important to take a step back and consider your needs and preferences. Dining room curtain styles are varied and there are a lot of choices for you to make when designing your drapes, so where do start? Review these tips for how to customize your drapery to look its best and meet your needs.

Tip 1: Ensure the Color & Style Match Your Existing Décor

Dining room curtain ideas like Luxe Linen drapes in Beige complement the light wood dining table
Pictured: Ripple Fold Drapery, Luxe Linen in Beige, design by Becca Tobin, photography by Katie Jameson

When exploring dining room curtain ideas, consider your existing décor. The color, pattern and texture of your drapery should complement your existing space either by matching your color scheme or by bringing in a complementary color or pattern. The style of your drapes should also match the aesthetic of your space, so a coastal dining room should have coastal-inspired drapery, and modern space should have sleek, modern drapery, etc.

Which Color Curtain Is Best for A Dining Room?

The best color for dining room curtains will ultimately depend on your existing aesthetic and your preferences. However, a good rule of them for choosing a drapery color is to go for a color that’s a shade or two lighter or darker than your wall color. This will ensure you get a cohesive, unified aesthetic without it looking too plain or monotone.

Tip 2: Go for Floor-Length Drapes

Dining room curtain ideas like light sheer drapes soften the bold pink upholstered accent chairs
Pictured: Tailored Pleat Drapery, C.O.M., S. Harris Aletsch Sheer in Alpine with Acero Hardware in Bronze, design by Lorna Gross for the 2021 Kips Bay Palm Beach Showhouse

Hanging curtains high and wide and extending the drape panels to the floor creates a luxurious look that accentuates the height of your windows and ceiling. For the best combination of aesthetic and functionality, your drapery should either kiss the floor or float just above it, so you can easily move the panels back and forth without dragging them.

Tip 3: Consider Functionality & Ease of Use

Dining room curtain ideas like Vitela fabric in White on a Madison track system make for easy use
Pictured: Ripple Fold Drapery with Madison Track Hardware in Black, design by Liz Ariola, photography by Julia D’Agostino

Dining room curtain ideas exploration should go beyond aesthetics: It’s also important to consider functionality. Think about whether you’ll be adjusting your drapery frequently or if they’ll serve as stationary decorative panels. This choice will influence your selection of hardware and compatible pleat styles, which feature options ideal for functional or decorative use. For the easiest use, choose a motorized track with a compatible pleat style. If you plan on designing stationary, decorative drapery, choose from one of the main rod and rings styles of hardware.

Tip 4: Think About Your Light Filtration & Privacy Needs

Dining room curtain ideas like sheer drapes layered with Solar Shades give you lots of light filtration
Pictured: Outer Later: Ripple Fold Drapery, Sheer Wool Blend in Grey Owl and Inner Layer: Solar Shades, 5% Metallic in Zinc

Be sure to consider light and privacy when exploring dining room curtain ideas. Does your dining room get lots of sunlight or does it face away from the sun? And do its windows look out into a remote area or a populated place? Certain dining room curtain styles can provide different levels of light and privacy control to suit your needs. Achieving the right level of privacy and light filtration will depend on the type of fabric you choose as well as lining options.

Tip 5: Consider Insulation Needs

Dining room curtain ideas like thick linen drapes with lining give you a plush look and great insulation
Pictured: Pinch Pleat Drapery, Linen in Walnut, photography by Anne Gattilia

If your dining room is drafty in cold weather and warm in hot weather, choose dining room curtain styles that help with insulation. Thermal curtains made with thick fabric and cotton interlining offer the best defense against both cold and hot weather, keeping your dining room pleasant and comfortable. If you live somewhere with year-long warmth, there are other types of curtains to keep the heat out beyond thick drapery, like sheers.

Now that you have an overview of dining room curtain styles as well as tips for how to customize your drapery, you’re ready to explore curated room for inspiration. Discover dining room curtain ideas from these examples and get product insight to recreate the look yourself.

Bring Color & Movement to Your Space with Drapery

Dining room curtain ideas with patterns like Family of Cranes in Waverly Blue add movement to your design
Pictured: Tailored Pleat Drapery with Acero Hardware in Shiny White, design by The Novogratz

For dining room curtain ideas that bright color and visual movement to your space, consider drapery with a beautiful, intricate pattern like one with bright blue cranes. The vibrant pattern can be a focal point of your desk, drawing the eye to your windows. Keep the rest of your dining room design toned down and muted to let the patterned drapery be the star of the show. Be sure to work in colors from the pattern into the rest of your décor, like in wall art or furniture, to create a cohesive, unified aesthetic.

Tips for Choosing the Right Neutral Color & Fabric

Selecting the perfect neutral curtain involves more than just picking a color. Here are some tips to help you make the best choice for your space:

  • Match Your Wall Color – If you’re not sure what neutral tone best suits your space, look to your wall color and choose a color for your curtains that is one or two shades lighter or darker than your wall. This is best done with neutrally colored walls.
  • Consider Your Room’s Atmosphere – What effect do you want your drapery to have on the room? Should they be calming or invigorating? This will help you determine whether neutral curtains with cool or warm undertones are right for your space.
  • Think About Light Control and Privacy – The level of light control and privacy your curtains provide is dictated mostly by the fabric and lining if you choose to add it. For softened light, choose light-filtering fabric and add privacy lining if needed for greater peace of mind. For a room darkening effect, choose a thick fabric like wool and add blackout lining for the best light blocking and privacy.

Find the Perfect Neutral Tone for Your Drapery

10+ Bedroom Window Treatment Ideas

Finding the perfect bedroom window treatments isn’t just about achieving the right look — it’s also about optimizing light control and ensuring privacy for restful sleep. So, when considering bedroom window treatment ideas, first think about your sleep preferences and then choose styles of window treatments that can create the right atmosphere for sleep.

The Importance of Bedroom Window Treatments

Modern bedroom window treatment ideas include Tailored Pleat Drapery in Oceana, Stone and Roller Shades in Bond, Charcoal
Pictured: Outer Layer: Tailored Pleat Drapery, Victoria Hagan Oceana in Stone and Inner Layer: Roller Shades, Bond in Charcoal, photography by John Bessler

Implementing the right window treatments will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your bedroom but will also play a crucial role in regulating natural light and maintaining privacy. A well-chosen window treatment — or combination — can create a serene atmosphere that contributes to a more restful night’s sleep.

Tips for Choosing Bedroom Window Treatments

When exploring bedroom window treatment ideas, keep in mind the following factors to ensure they meet your needs and preferences:

Bedroom window treatment ideas should suit your light and privacy control needs like privacy lined drapery over patio doors
Pictured: Tailored Pleat Drapery, Victoria Hagan Petal in Pearl, design by Victoria Hagan

Consider How Light Enters Your Bedroom

If sunlight streams into your room directly, consider blackout window treatments to fully block the light. If you don’t get any direct sunlight, light-filtering options may be enough to create a tranquil environment.

Think About Your Sleep Preferences

Do you need complete darkness to sleep, or do you like to wake with the morning light? Blackout window treatments are essential for those who need darkness, but for those who don’t, light-filtering options provide softened light that allows you to wake with the sun.

Consider Functionality

Window treatments are available with different control types, like continuous loop, cordless and motorization, some of which are easier to use than others. For the easiest functionality for any window treatment, opt for motorization. Motorized window treatments can be opened and closed with a remote, an app on your smartphone or even the sound of your voice when paired with a smart home system. You can also set timers for your window treatments to open and close automatically when you need it.

Think About Style & Aesthetics

Once you decide on the light control and the functionality for your bedroom, you can start thinking about style and aesthetics, so the bedroom window treatment ideas you implement capture a look you love.

Bedroom window treatment ideas should be functional and suit your look, like Ripple Fold Drapery in Lisbon Woven, Agave
Pictured: Ripple Fold Drapery, Nate Berkus Lisbon Woven in Agave with blackout lining, design by Nate Berkus

Now that you know some of the factors to think about when considering bedroom window treatment ideas, explore curated bedrooms for inspiration. These ideas vary in style, light, and privacy control so you can find the right combination for your needs. Plus, you’ll find product information for each curated bedroom to capture the same look yourself.

1. Cozy Farmhouse Bedroom with Blackout Shades

Bedroom window treatment ideas for a cozy farmhouse style include Flat Roman Shades made of Aberdeen in Oat
Pictured: Flat Roman Shades with blackout lining, photography by John Bessler

For bedroom window treatment ideas that capture a farmhouse-inspired look, opt for Flat Roman Shades made of a subtle plaid pattern. Roman Shades offer the inviting, soft look of Drapery without the luscious panels of fabric, which better suits the practically minded — but still warm and inviting — farmhouse style.

For a room darkening effect ideal for sleep, be sure to add blackout lining to your shades and outside mount them on your window. An outside mount offers more coverage than an inside-mount, especially when the shade extends a few inches above, below and on the side of the window.

Pictured: Outer Layer: Inverted Pleat Drapery, Herringbone in Onyx with blackout lining and Inner Layer: Solar Shades, 5% Metallic in Copper

In a modern beach house, your views are a key characteristic of your home, so it’s important to balance the beauty of the outdoors with the privacy and light control you need indoors. To achieve the right balance, consider a combination of Solar Shades and Drapery. The Solar Shades filter sunlight while preserving views, and the Drapery enhances light control and privacy.

Solar Shades allow you to see through them while providing some privacy during the day. They also block up to 99% of UV rays, keeping your room cooler and more comfortable. At night, Solar Shades privacy is not as strong, as their transparency gets reversed if you have lights on inside.

Drapery, especially thick fabric like Herringbone, a cotton-linen blend, with blackout lining, will offer you the privacy and light control you need at night. Be sure to choose a pleat style that’s compatible with a track system, as this will allow you to slide your drapery panels open and closed with ease.

Tips for Choosing Fabric for Roman Shades

Now that you know the types of fabric for Roman Shades, learn some tips for how to choose the right one for your style preferences and practical needs.

1. Consider Your Preferred Roman Shade Style

Your chosen style of Roman Shade will help determine which type of fabric best suits the style. For crisp, streamlined styles like Flat or Cascade Roman Shades, consider fabric with a bit more body and stiffness like cotton, wool or heavyweight linen. Styles with more curving designs like Relaxed or Tulip Roman Shades might benefit from lighter, more pliable fabric like wool blends, lightweight linen or sheers.

2. Think About Your Light & Privacy Control Needs

The Roman Shade fabric you choose will greatly affect the amount of light filtering into your space and the level of privacy you maintain. Heavier fabrics offer more privacy and better light control, while lighter and sheer fabrics allow for softened natural light for a breezier, airier feel. Also remember that linings can be added to most fabrics to improve your privacy and light control, while still enjoying the fabric you love.

3. Consider Room Type & Fabric Performance

Different rooms have different demands. Kitchens and bathrooms require fabrics that can withstand moisture and are easy to clean. Living rooms and bedrooms might benefit from more luxurious fabrics that add comfort and style. Choose durable and easy-to-clean fabrics for high-traffic areas or homes with children and pets.

4. Evaluate the Maintenance Needs of Your Preferred Fabric

All fabric for Roman Shades does well with regular cleaning with a low-suction, handheld vacuum. For more intense cleaning to remove stains or embedded dust and dirt, many fabrics require professional cleaning services. For a durable, low-maintenance choice, opt for blended fabrics like wool blends or linen blends, or go for high-performance Sunbrella fabric.

5. Choose a Fabric that Suits Your Existing Aesthetic

When choosing fabric for Roman Shades, keep your existing décor in mind. Consider the colors and patterns already in your space and opt for a fabric that will look cohesive. For a room with neutral colors and subtle patterns, enliven your space with a bold, unique patterned fabric. For a room already filled with color and pattern, choose a simple fabric with subtle coloring or patterning.

  • Block out distractions: Home office curtains can block visual distractions outside so you can focus.
  • Enhance privacy: Curtains provide privacy to conduct your work in peace and keep private information private, especially if your home office window has a view that’s clear for passersby or neighbors to see through with ease.
  • Control light: Curtains help cut the glare of sunlight on your computer screen for reduced eye strain.
  • Improve acoustics: Curtains absorb sound (especially thicker curtains with lining), cutting down on distractions while improving the acoustics while you’re in meetings.

Light & Privacy Control

Curtains are available in a variety of weights and opacities, from light, airy sheers to thick wools so you can capture the right level of light and privacy control. You can also add lining to moist fabrics for added privacy and light blockage.

Ease of Use

Drapery is available in easy-to-use pleat styles and hardware as well as stationary decorative panels. If you’ll be adjusting your curtains throughout the day, choose functional pleats and hardware like Ripple Fold Drapery on a track system (pictured). If your home office curtains will be purely decorative you can choose stationary options. If you love decorative panels but still need functionality, layer your curtains with Shades or Blinds.

Pictured: Ripple Fold Drapery, Wool Sateen in Winter, design by Ariel Okin for the 2018 Real Simple House, photography by Darina Todorova

Sound Absorption

The long panels of drapery fabric are excellent at absorbing sounds to keep your office peaceful and quiet. For the best sound absorption, choose thick fabrics like wool or wool blends, heavyweight linens, velvet or even silk. Adding lining, especially interlining (a cotton flannel insert), can also help absorb more sound for a more tranquil office.

energy efficiency

Need to block a draft or hot air coming through your office window? Choosing the right customizations in terms of fabric and lining will give you a more temperate interior climate that you can be more comfortable in. Luckily, the same customizations for sound absorption are great for energy efficiency, too, so choose thicker fabrics and add lining for the best insulating effect.

Capture the carefree, relaxing aesthetic of boho design with lots of natural textures throughout your office in the décor, wallpaper and window treatments. Layer natural home office curtains made of Linen Blend in White with Waterfall Woven Wood Shades for a mix of soft and coarse textures. A coarse material in a warm honey-colored wood tone like Tahoe in Oak delivers lots of tactile and visual texture. For a touch more design dimension, add a decorative trim to your white drapery, such as Flanders in Olive. To balance all the textures throughout your space, choose a simple, minimalist white desk and chair.

For a bright, sun-filled home office, create balance with blackout window treatments to block the light and cut the glare while you work. The combination of a blackout Roller Shade with a blackout-lined Flat Roman Shade ensures a peaceful room darkening effect even on the sunniest days. To keep your space feeling light and airy, choose light-colored materials for your home office window treatments, such as Morrison Blackout in Pearl for your Roller Shade and an elegant pattern for your Roman Shade. Ensure other elements of your design are also light-colored and streamlined, so that even in the tranquil dark, your space will still feel lively.

Adding decorative tape in Noir to your blinds creates a bold look that accentuates the modern, linear design of your home office window treatments.
